The Keio 5000 Series entered service in 1963 as an 18 m, three-door commuter train for Keio Teito Electric Railway. Introduced alongside the Shinjuku station underground project and the 1,500 V power upgrade, the series was used on newly introduced limited express services and received the Laurel Prize in 1964. Air-conditioning was added from 1968, and the fleet remained in service until 1996 after the Keio CI logo was applied in 1989.
Key features and specifications
- This 4-car basic set represents air-conditioning-retrofitted Series 5000 cars as seen from around 1980 to 1988.
- Cars 5715 and 5765 feature four RPU-2203 medium distributed coolers and one ventilator each; cars 5015 and 5065 feature one FTUR-375-205 rectangular concentrated cooler and one ventilator each.
- Bogies: 5715 and 5765 use NA-321T; 5015 and 5065 use KH-55A.
- The front destination display is fitted with Keio Hachioji, with Shinjuku and blank plates included.
- Recreates the former company crest, K.T.R. logo, removed car-number plate holders, and PT42 pantographs without horn-shaped shoe tips.
- All cars use body-mounted close couplers without hooks; a center buffer can be fitted to the leading end to represent electric jumpers.
- Head and tail lights, passing indicator lights, and front destination panels are illuminated with white LEDs. Lighting can be switched off, and passing indicators can be selected individually.
- Includes front service classification plates for Limited Express, Express, Semi Express, Rapid, Commuter Rapid, Out of Service, and Blank.
- Slotless motor provides smooth, quiet running. DCC friendly.
