The E2-0 series Shinkansen model reproduces the early red-striped Yamabiko J formation as it appeared at introduction. The real E2-0 series trains began operation in 1997 on the Tohoku, Joetsu, and Nagano SHINKANSEN lines. Sets with a splitting and merging function used on the Tohoku SHINKANSEN were designated J-series, while sets for the Nagano SHINKANSEN were designated N-series. When the J-series first appeared it matched the N-series design with a red stripe and eight cars; in 2002 the sets were expanded to ten cars and the exterior stripe was changed to pink.
