The 373 series was introduced in 1995 as a replacement for the 165 series. This train type debuted on the Fujikawa limited express and later served on the Tokai and Inaji services. Modernizing JR Central's express fleet that had previously used JNR-era rolling stock, the 373 series upgraded service levels to limited express operations.
