The WAMU 90000 series was a two-axle covered freight car modified from the WAMU 23000 series by changing its running gear to a two-stage link type to increase operating speed. Some units were built as WAMU90000 from the start, while others were converted from WAMU 23000 cars. This model was one of the representative covered freight cars of the Japanese National Railways era, with numbers declining after successor models such as the WAMU80000 series were introduced. The WAMU90000 series was retired by 1984.
